Alcian Blue – 71705

Despite a stateside birth Alcian Blue are almost in every department an Anglo proposition. For ‘71705’ read Depeche Mode, Curve, the Cure or Joy Division. Of course there’s nothing wrong with this as long as the material is individual enough not to sound derivative, or worse still descend into pastiche. Last year the Bravery flattered to deceive on all but 3 tracks from their debut album, proving that their range of tricks needed to expand beyond the solitary if they were truly going to figure. This is the challenge facing Alcian Blue’s long player, which is due for release in July. ‘71705’ resurrects New Orders long lost drum machine and combines it with Dave Gahan’s sombre yet enticing vocalities. In the background an organ drifts about a like a thick plume of fog yet the groups vision remains tight, focused and alluring. For those who were wondering, Alcian blue stains acid mucosubstances and acetic mucins. KD
