‘Flowers in the Basement’ has that rare quality of stopping those within earshot from engaging in other activities (including breathing in extreme cases). That is in the main because it’s difficult to quantify its greatness. That heft in quality actually stems from a combination of the vocals and instrumental volleys of which there are several acts. Quite the rollercoaster then, especially when it veers unexpectedly off-road in a fit of incandescent rage. Mammoth Indigo come from Virginia and on this evidence appear to be hitting full throttle before the arrival of their 2nd LP ‘Wilt’. KH
