This is about as classic as folk gets, right down to a performer who hasn’t been singing for a lifetime but certainly exhibits that worldly view. And when that brass kicks in you realise that this is bigger and bolder than the initial movements suggested. ‘Old Moon’ is not quite grizzled but there is comfort in the way it feels like it has come from a distant time, a time when songs were songs and not just an excuse to showcase flashy studio production techniques. That it was recorded in a small town in New Zealand, where one gaze outside the window can fill you with wonder, probably explains why this number has a smouldering gravitas. KH
