Evan Tyler and Topless Literati – You’re Hysterical

It doesn’t take too much noise to make a cult dance record and by that I mean it doesn’t need to thump thump you into dancefloor submission. All that is generally required is something just above the quietness of a mouse. You can go back as far as the early 90’s for A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Voodoo Ray’, which was such an unassuming sort that almost from the get-go attached itself velcro-like to the affections of all and sundry. And that’s what I thought of when I first heard the laidback charmer that is Evan Tyler and Topless Literati’s (Lauren Fournier) collaboration ‘You’re Hysterical’ from Tyler’s album ‘Cat Raps’. Despite what you might think this song’s greatest gift is in the lyrics which betray the otherwise chilled atmosphere; they have an almost ‘Insomnia’ style intensity about them. Here is a man that is going through an intense mental trauma as all around him a soothing soundtrack weaves its magic with the repetitive slogan in the title betraying his inner turmoil. For many however this is just a sumptuous groove, slightly intensifying during Tyler’s rapping sequences, that should prove to be a conduit to many pleasurable sun-going-down summer evenings. KD
