At the close of a bank holiday weekend the emotions that well up from deep inside tend to be ones of the raw variety rather than feelings of expectancy and excitement. Who wouldn’t rather be kicking a football, squelching on the white sand of a local beach or for the more swag heavy amongst us picking up where we left off the night at the Blackjack table on Gaming Club. As these precious memories seep away in a pile of yet to be ironed starch-heavy shirts I find a brief dalliance with some uplifting audio can reignite the spirit prior to the trip back to administrationland.
Today’s 4 minutes of earful treasure is courtesy of Ottawa’s Kalle Mattson whose current album ‘Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold’ was nominated for 2014’s Polaris Prize. Not only does the album’s title track (well, almost) display a steady hand but also an ingenuity to do clever things with seemingly ordinary raw materials. So there is intensity which you could easily confuse for understated laidback vibes. The song burns bright for over 5 minutes while revealing a heart heavy with black clouds. KD
