Where to start with the driving, propulsive Galáctico that is Youth Mass’ debut LP? From a band who’ve rarely popped their head above the precipice release wise (apart from a couple of well received singles and an unheralded football song) comes a fully realised cinematic work that just bursts with vitality, aided in no small part by some of the best segues you’ll hear this side of ‘Source Tags & Codes’. Youth Mass certainly owe a debt to 1990’s indie rock with Idlewild circa ‘Hope is Important’ and ‘100 Broken Windows’ springing to mind. ‘Morning Run – Evening Sun’ is a blast of underground genres although the overarching feeling is one of post-rock with the cascading guitars supplied by Neil Nevins and Darren Mullarkey an unstoppable EITS force. That said there are also plenty of vocals and moments of deep electronic motorik which creates a kaleidoscope effect so that the album is forever in a state of evolution. And for all the promise, expertise and downright brilliant songwriting exuded there is every indication that Youth Mass could well raise their game even further for the follow-up. Take a listen to ‘Dream On’ below and prepare to have your preconceptions altar’d. KD
