Sans Chateaux – Holy Venus

Sans Chateux

I had big things planned for St. Patrick’s Day, like throwing some light on a sprinkling of the wealth of undervalued Irish bands. As it turned out I succumbed to that most Irish of traits, namely one that leads to one of the many bastions of fag butts, lively if largely forgettable chat and stale sticky floor surfaces dotted around the capital. Couldn’t let the occasion slip by though without mentioning this new Irish act who are based variously between Cork and Canada. Sans Chateaux’s debut EP is due at the end of April and is a delightful chamber pop menagerie of influences. Not sure if the band are even aware of the Last Post or Brian but they remind me so much of those two seminal Irish acts. An early uncluttered Belle & Sebastian also springs to mind (and what a vocalist they have too, who sometimes approximates the brass that periodically makes an appearance) but overall the feeling is of unbridled talent and I for one will drink heartily to that.
