I’ll admit it now that I wasted thousands of gallons worth of my Mam’s petrol on Dire Straits ‘Brothers In Arms’. Wasn’t that I especially liked them but they were popular, I was impressionable and Texaco’s selection of cassettes was quite limited (I already had ‘Born In The USA’). Listening back most of the album is gloop but that doesn’t stop small reminders of it from sounding pleasant. Especially when the renditions are performed by such skilful acts as the husband and wife team of Justin Rice and Darbie Nowatka. ‘So Far Away’ is one of ‘Brothers In Arms’ more amenable turns and the Last Names do Knopfler proud with their dreamy interpretation. It is one of 52 covers that the Last Names are going to record in 2012, one for every week and there’s hardly a dud to be had thusfar. More evidence for that particular argument can be heard on their sensitive handling of the Pogues ‘Rainy Night In Soho’ (no A). KD
