Not sure when Bell X1 ended for you but for me it was a few minutes after they left the stage at Marlay Park in 2004. That was their moment, supporting their sparkling ‘Music In Mouth’ album, with apple’s named Eve talking pride of place amongst the gilded jangling chords. What followed was colourless and with it the sense that the band weren’t up for finding their own voice, but more intent on aping someone else’s (currently and bloodlessly Talking Heads). ‘Snakes And Snakes’ was the band’s crowning glory from that wonderful 2003 album, a song so top heavy with moments of sucrose clarity it been known to set me off on a bout of genuflecting. I agree with all of this, and it kinda makes me sad.
Don’t be sad, they had one more great album than most bands.
