To some he’s God, to others he’s still just a member of that famous Sheffield band led by Jarvis Cocker (not to mention his time in Longpigs). What both sets will make of his take on ‘Silent Night’ is open to question but to these ears it is a marvellous achievement. ‘Silent Night’ is especially suited to Hawley’s heavy yet vulnerable tones, he is at his best when the momentum slows to a crawl. Further rewards come by way of the guitars, which have a slight Hawaiian twang that gives the tune a unique flavour. Hawley is currently appearing on a Arctic Monkey’s b-side ‘Bad Woman’ and as himself on the LP ‘Lady’s Bridge’. KD
